Love, Lulu Mae? We sure do!
Wedding Insider Blog – Agnes Miles of Love, Lulu Mae
One of our writers, Stefania, doesn’t like to do her hair. I mean, she washes it and stuff – but you’ll never see with bobby pins in her teeth, Elnett in hand going at her lovely locks with a teasing comb (leave that to Jo). She came home from Renegade Craft Fair last year, opened her bag and placed upon her thick, shiny mane this piece of art. Not a headband, but not a hat. She looks at me and says, “I don’t need to do my hair, this IS my hairstyle!” It was a beautiful – a true ARTcessory if you will!
And so began a love affair with Love, Lulu Mae. Purveyor of vintage-inspired headdresses to chic ladies everywhere, Agnes Miles creates gorgeous headpieces inspired by ladies of the 30’s and 40’s. Don’t be surprised if you see birdcage netting, flora and fauna in lush colors, and unique compositions in her headbands, hats, clips and beyond.
Better Off Wed was lucky enough to interview Agnes “Lulu Mae” Miles about the newest addition to her collection – yup – BRIDAL. Love, Lulu Mae offers custom headpieces with vintage flair. Read on to learn about the process of creating one of these sure-to-be-keepsakes for your big day!
BOW: Has the wedding collection always been a part of your line?
LLM: The Love, Lulu Mae Bridal Couture Collection is new this year! January 2010 is when we officially launched our new line!
BOW: Can you describe the process in creating a custom bridal headpiece?
LLM: When I sit down with a bride for a consultation it is always a unique experience, but I like to gather basic information such as the wedding date, what her fashion sense is, what style of veil or piece she is looking for, what her dress is like, etc. After going over these details, I send several sketches of the design the bride and I discussed. After approval I start the actual creation of the piece! We meet again for a final fitting and make any changes necessary. It sounds like quite a process, but it’s important to me to create a unique and well crafted piece that meets the bride’s specifications and to her satisfaction for her special day!
BOW: Girl, you are getting some hot press! Especially with wedding sites like One Wed, Third Coast Bride, and With This Ring. Why do you think the vintage look is appealing to so many brides? (P.S. Totally reminds me of the Annie Get Your Gun Song “Old Fashioned Wedding”)
LLM: Haha! I love that song! I think many brides desire vintage inspired weddings because deep down inside most women are very traditional. Especially when it comes to planning the look and feel of their big day! Vintage looks are timeless, elegant and classic. They want to look back at their wedding pictures thirty and forty years from now and remember how gorgeous, glamorous and happy they felt on their wedding day. It gives me great satisfaction to know this.
BOW: A custom piece seems like a good place to incorporate an heirloom piece or traditions like “Something old, something new…” – do you often finding yourself making that an element of the creation?
LLM: Absolutely! Most of my bridal pieces incorporate a grandmother’s brooch, or mother’s earrings. Sometimes brides bring in family heirloom pieces for inspiration in the creating process.
BOW: What is your favorite part of creating a custom bridal piece?
LLM: It’s definitely working with the bride. As I mentioned earlier, each one on one session is a unique experience and creating with a client is just so awesome! It is such a joyous time in a woman’s life. I use the excitement that she brings and her anticipation of the big day as inspiration for what I see in her and how she will look back and remember Love, Lulu Mae as an important part of the beauty of her wedding day.
